- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2019Style Name: Without additional batteriesVerified PurchaseHave had my eye on this set for a while and decided to take the plunge when the price hit £140.
I have absolutely no regrets. The set was really enjoyable to build and never got repetitive as some can do and every step was so satisfying and became so addictive. When you mount the bucket to the arm was a highlight, it all just fit into place and you could see where all the gears and wheels engaged with one another. As you went along it just got bigger and bigger and you wonder where it will stop, you're going to need a lot of room to display this model.
Many reviews will tell you that the set is very slow when using the motorized functions and this is true, but when you see the amount of gearing on this thing you can understand why. It's also quite heavy so it's not really surprising so I would'nt count this as a negative.
If I had to pick a negative with this set it's that there are quite a few stickers. Personally, for an expensive set I expect Lego to stop penny pinching and print the parts but that's probably never going to happen.
So yes, a fantastic set. Whether you're a Technic fan or not you'll probably enjoy the finished product no end. You'll probably require an extra pair of hands on occasion and kids will probably require adult supervision.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2018Style Name: Without additional batteriesVerified PurchaseThis is the largest Lego technic set available.I was initially apprehensive about ordering this kit,as it is very daunting, but I needn’t have worried,as the instructions were fantastic, and it went together beautifully.I did decide to alter the gear ratio of the bucket,as it was too highly geared as standard, and needed lowering, because the bucket was jamming up.This was easy to do using just the parts that came with the kit, slightly rearranged.
Lego really should have done this modification in the form of an addendum to the instructions,I don’t know why they didn’t.
Anyway,if you’re in two minds whether to buy this, you don’t need to worry,it’s nowhere near as hard to build as it looks, and it’s huge and impressive once it’s built.guaranteed to turn heads!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 October 2016Style Name: Without additional batteriesVerified PurchaseThis set from Lego is amazing!
There is an awesome use of gears to obtain a lot of different function with just 1 XL Motor.
Otherwise this is even the weak point of this model: only 1 Motor (even if XL) for such a big and complex model it's just not enough and you will notice that some movements are not so fluid.
Batteries must be of good quality and at full charge for best results.
Visually impressive and presenting some new parts that will give new opportunities for custom creations.
The model contain even a white mining truck very similar to set Lego 42035, anyway this is a more simple version of it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 March 2017Style Name: Without additional batteriesVerified PurchaseThe spirit of LEGO technic is in its construction. As an AFOL I only build large sized sets. The excavator when finished is well worth the 18 hours I spent making it as I did not want to make a single mistake. . It is huge and a very satisfying build. The movements are a replication of the monster excavators that are steady and slow, so I would not call it sluggish but actually it is totally realistic. Full credit should go to the design team. I was pleasantly surprised that the excavator can rotate endlessly if left on a battery. The forward movement is also ok. what do you expect; a construction equipment going at the speed of a Porsche!. LEGO should continue giving us sets this engrossing each year.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 September 2017Style Name: Without additional batteriesVerified PurchaseIts BIG. But you already know that. As a 62 year old newcomer to Lego I am amazed by the sophistication and complexity of the Lego Technics range. Since buying the Lego ideas Saturn V and the Yellow Submarine a couple of months back I have waded in and purchased the LEGO 42043 Technic Mercedes-Benz Truck and the LEGO 42054 Technic CLAAS XERION 5000 tractor and this set . I have to say I was in two minds about purchasing this as many folk have commented on the difficulties in making the power functions operate. Also, it frankly looks like some thing of a rejected prop from Thunderbirds. Still the challenge of building the currently biggest Technics available together with a good price from Amazon made me dive in. The build is split into 8 stages with components in numbered ( 1 - 8 ) plastic bags. Some stages have multiple bags for a given stage for example there are nine bags marked as '6' - this is biggest stage as it contains the 75 cm long bucket arm. Assembly instructions for the model are for the most part excellent and as there are 450 pages, plentiful.
I did not find any of this build particularly challenging and my advice just take your time and don't rush it, the fun is the build and watching the thing take shape is great fun, highlight has to be attaching the bucket arm to the base caterpillar unit.
Important: I did take care with the assembly to ensure that gears had room to move laterally as the instructions advise. I am pretty sure this is the reason some folk have reported problems with the power operation. The motor is a Lego XL but frankly it is being pushed to its limits driving this 3.5 kg beast and the sheer amount of friction being generated by all those gears is considerable. That said it runs fine if slowly ( geared downed a lot, to provide authentic feel and also the only way this much mass is going to be moved by that small a motor, but again I doubt the real thing that inspired this model holds any lap records!
Driving the caterpillars is limited to forward/ backward i.e. no steering. Use of the power functions to drive, swivel upper stage around the base and power the bucket wheel and two conveyor belts is handled via two gear boxes and is not the most intuitive experience that said with practice you will get there.
For comparison and based on my limited experience, if I had to choose between this and the LEGO 42043 Technic Mercedes-Benz Truck, the truck wins as it is hands down more fun and challenging to build and unlike this model it is based on an actual prototype rather than a generic hazy concept, on a good day both models can be found on Amazon for around £135 give or take. At this price point I think it represents good value for money and certainly for myself not disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Espectacular
Style Name: Without additional batteriesVerified PurchaseLego nunca falla.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bellissimo

5.0 out of 5 stars
Style Name: Without additional batteriesVerified Purchase
